Winter where are you?

Dec 08, 2016
Snow situation is desperate in the northern alps around Innsbruck at the moment. Nothing unusual this time of the year, at least it is cold. Mid November saw some of the best early conditions alltime and left the feet blistered, testing prototypes of both new boards and bindings that are coming up soon. Shortly after warm and stormy winds, snow melting, and the familiar term ALTSCHNEEPROBLEM showing up in the first avalange reports, if you remeber last years. Weather is crazy but it is what it is. Time to hide in the workshop and build some boards, this time a revival of our workhorse slasher. But see for yourself.....

May Powder

May 06, 2016
El Nino winter was the program this year, often discussed with my brother who is a meteorologist. When everyone was desperately waiting for snow in January, his only reply was: Don´t worry, will be a long and snowy winter in spring. And he was right. The past weeks brought repeated snowfalls in the Alps and winter made up for a slow start. It is May, it felt like January, but who cares. Again, this is the 8th consecutive month of riding, and for the keen splitheads glacier touring season has just started.

Stubai Classics

Apr 11, 2016
Sunday funday. Long mission off Stubai glacier. Impressive how much distance one can cover with a splitboard. Warmup run on the slopes, short hike up a ridge, followed by endless carves down a glacier. 2nd hike up 1200m vertical to cross over to another valley, another long ride down to some hut, and slush slashing all the way down after a well deserved Speckknödelsuppe. Total distance covered hiking and riding was 25km. Now the legs need a rest. It is not over yet.

March delivers 2

Mar 16, 2016
March is our favourite. It just keeps us happy with good conditons for skinning up some mountains. Good thing there is plenty of them around. Today was propably one of the best rides this season, all alone up a mighty peak and nothing but well earned pow all the way to the bottom. Enjoy.

March delivers

Mar 12, 2016
The touring season is on. March seems to be the best month for riding powder, with stable weather and good snow coverage. We have been all over the place, never too far off Innsbruck. Pleasant sunny days, hikes with friends and dogs, well know mountains and new zones, and a lot of powder. Options are plentyful these days, and it has pretty much just started. Avalanche danger remains somehow tricky with an old weak layer, but things have definitely eased off a lot. Also we have been testing new prototypes and are working on a strong new collection of splitboard systems. You will be surprised what is coming up. Although winter never made it to the lower areas this season, it is definitely happening up in the mountains. Check out the gallery for some snowy impressions of the past 2 weeks, it has been just too good.

Finally a stable day with nice weather and good snow conditions. It seems like this is something rare this season. Exploring around the backbowl of Kappl ski resort payed off and there was pow runs top to bottom. Always nice to go and check out new mountains. Now the weather is fucked again and rain up to 2200m with gale force winds did their thing. It seems like there will be more snow and colder conditions next week so fingers crossed.....

Winter is back

Jan 31, 2016
Hello there, long time no updates from us. Slow start of winter here in the alps, but looks like february will deliver. First hikes are in the books, and it looks like many more will follow as soon as conditions allow. Innsbruck was blessed with some good powder in January, allowing for hikes just behind our headquater. 1500m vertical behind the house is not too bad.

India

Jun 21, 2015
In may Sebastian travelled to India to climb some peaks with his splitboard. Serious poject with serious preparation. After a week of trekking to basecamp at 4700m, they found good snow and weather conditions in the following 3 weeks. Hiking and riding in high altitude is something completely different, and there is a lot to strategically managing equipment and the approach to the peak. There is not a lot of room for error and misjudging situations, some skills that have to be obtained in years of spending time in the mountains and pushing the own limits. From today on the days are getting shorter again, and soon the mountains of the northern hemisphere will get dumped again, but really a splitboard is quite handy all year round if you consider the world as your zone. Go out there and explore, almost always the view from up top will be rewarding.

And again a fantastic winter season has come to an end. After 8 month of consecutive riding it is time to relax the legs and mind. As the last snow melts, we pack up some surfboards and chase some waves. Summertime here we go. Thank you winter for everything, you are great. Please come back soon.

What a week! Pow, pow, and even more pow. After a couple of resort riding days close to Innsbruck we went to check out higher regions in search for more, and we found it. Snow conditions high up are still amazing this time of the year. Now spring is hitting hard, and there is no doubt that this season will come to an end soon. Still there are some more missions coming up shortly.

Spring Classics

Apr 05, 2015
What a final of the season! Well, after the last 2 days of repeated snowfalls down to the very bottom it rather feels like January now. Fair enough, Mr. Winter is a moody person and does what he wants. And if what he wants is sending 1 meter of fresh towards Tyrol we won´t complain. Next week will be hot in terms of fresh snow and stable weather with a lot of sunshine. Very frustrating that one cannot be everywhere at the same time, but i guess these are luxury problems. Attached some pics and clips of recent hikes and stuff.

No word from us in a long time. Sorry, but we were busy shredding some fine lines all over the place. Snow conditions were amazing with bluebird days one after another. Freeride City

Jan 30, 2015
Innsbruck is the place to be for any serious mountain people and offers the comfort of a very nice city paired with easy access to alpine areas. Last week we have been all over the place, and there is always something to do in any conditions. We got blessed with fresh snow and the casual bluebird day in between. The gallery pics should speak for themselves, cause everything you see can be accessed with short hikes or straight from the lifts with little bootpacks. There are so many options that sometimes it is really hard to decide where to go. Too many choices. Innsbruck, we truly love you.

Hochegg

Jan 25, 2015
Recon mission into Val die Fleres. Pretty quiet for a Saturday. There is enough snow to make it into the back bowl at Ochsenalm, but very wind-affected even down there. Even worse the higher we climb, massive windloaded pockets everywhere. Safe ridges pretty much the only spots that want to be touched. The rest looks too funky. Variable snowpack changing every 5 meters from pow to packed to crust to dust. No major slides in the area though. Seems like all the snow got blown into Pflerschtal from Stubaital.

Riepenwand 2

Jan 21, 2015
Return to Riepenwand. Little windy day so a lot of sluff falling out from the walls above us. Sick pictures, thanks Sebastian Marko. Check out his website if you feel like it: www.sebastian-marko.at People are still dying every day, judgment of what is safe and what is not is very difficult these days and only seems possible if one has the chance to feel the snowpack every day. We recently got a lot of attitude for posting pics of what feels unsafe for a lot of people, while media reports avalanche casualties almost daily. Just to be clear of that, freeriding is very hip these days, and it is risky and dangerous indeed. We have no intention of dying anytime soon, and to be honest we really worry about our own safety a lot. An avalanche report might give you a good overview of general dangers, but judgement has to happen on the spot. Careful out there.

Kalkkögel

Jan 19, 2015
The Kalkkögel between the 2 resorts of Lizum and Schlick are a fantastic mountain ridge second to none. This ridge has everything on offer. Steep chutes, open bowls, and everything within hitting distance from Innsbruck city. It is so easy and quick to leave everything behind and just escape the daily routine for a couple of hours. It is questionable if a new gondola should connect the 2 resorts, and as always there are 2 sides of the medal. Sick days...

Hochkönig

Jan 08, 2015
Avy danger was high, conditions really tricky, and in Tyrol it had rained up to 2000m. Where to go? Hochkönig. The south face of Mandlwand looked great on pics, so after a few phonecalls to our friends from Livingroom Hochkönig it was clear that things should be good further east. It was still big sketch in the top ridge, but below 2200m we found stable and fluffy snow. Happy New Year 2015

Jan 03, 2015
And so it is 2015. Happy new year to everyone. We wish you a lot of snow, powderdays, faceshots, lines, treeruns, sick carves and everything else that makes snowboarding so much fun. After a slow start of winter, things are improving at the moment, unfortunately with heavy wind and a lot of sketch. Avy danger is high, and accidents every day showcase that the thirst for pow actually can kill. Choose your lines wisely, one bad call could end things in the fraction of a second.

Zufallspitz

Dec 11, 2014
Still no real snow in Austria, so again we had to go explore to see what the south has on offer. A few phonecalls, wether checks and the decision is made. Martelltal in South Tyrol it is this time. Upon arrival we discover a decent snow base at 2000m, increasing rapidly as soon as we gain height. It is still bluebird and the only thing we see is some clouds hanging out north of us, as predicted. It is a little windy, but it is forecasted that this wind should die out during the day, so we continue our hike without any concerns. The glacier looks good, no crevasses or anything at first glance, although glacier hikes are tricky in December. Equipped with a GPS tracker and maps we navigate the wide ice fields and try our best to avoid any crevasse danger. We decide that a rope is pointless since it is only two of us, and 1 person alone likely cannot stop a crevasse fall on his own. We quickly gain altitude, and as we are approaching the actual peak of 3757m, all the sudden the wind picks up, pushes clouds into our direction. Sunshine fades into flatlight, a stiff breeze turns into a solid storm and all the sudden the nice glacier bowl looks mean and intimidating. 200m below the peak we decide to retreat and get out. Still a very nice day.

Bernina Pass

Nov 24, 2014
No snow in Tyrol, so the call was to go south, go high and go explore a little. After checking a few webcams, snow reports and gathering some other info, we decided to head to Engadin over the weekend. Above 2000m in the southern alps it is winter, there is a good base, and there is pow. Most of the lifts are still closed, so we were hiking around the pass for 2 days and got rewarded with beautiful weather and stunning views, not to mention sick untracked north facing steeps with stable conditions. Also we spotted some new mountains around the area, and I guess it won´t be long until we come back for more.

It has been a few months since the last entry. And we have been busy. Our new webpage is online, and voila, it looks like all the sudden we do have a small but fine product line. 3 boards, 4 bindings, skins, crampons, poles, and all sorts of adapters to mount the bindings onto everything. Not bad i would say. Well, how did that happen? Looking back at the very start of splitsticks a couple of years back, I still stand there and wonder. Thank you everyone who put in an effort to push things, thank you who actually bought an unknown product from an unknown brand and spread the stoke, thank you everyone who believed in the project. Without you guys it would not have been possible. As I am writing these lines, a cold front is predicted for Austria in a couple of days, likely giving us a first taste of winter that is just around the corner. The game is on soon. Winter is coming. The Final Call?

Milking Lizum

May 08, 2014
It is may, the season seems over. For most people it is. Others just got started and swarm the higher peaks, or escape up north for longer days. Fact is that a splitboard season can be pretty long. From the first hikes in october until end of may it is 8 months of the year where shredding and hiking is an option around Innsbruck. This is why we are here, this is why we make splits. Actually there is a coldfront coming this weekend, and snow below 1500m is predicted, with hopefully some stable weather afterwards. It is not over yet.

The weight game

Dec 15, 2013
When touring, weight is always a key factor. People seem to be obsessed with weight savings, even sacrificing performance and durability for lightweight products. Weight savings only make sense if stability and downhill performance remain. A clear statement from our side: We will never ever give up shredding performance for weight savings. Way more important is the ration between stability and weight, which shows the true potential of touring equipment.

Touring Madness

Dec 01, 2013
Snowboarders on splitboards were a rare thing to see in the mountains over the last years. A booming touring industry and the recent split hype have changed that. All the sudden splitters are everywhere. It is crazy to see what is happening on sunny weekends with fresh snow. Common easy access peaks see hundrets of people running up like lemmings and it takes only half a day to turn an untouched mountain into a slope. Good or bad, this is not to be judged. It is what it is. There are plenty of mountains out there, and solitude is easy to get if one is willing to walk a little bit further.

How it all began

Jan 01, 2013
Splitsticks basically is an accident, something that was never planned. We never wanted to start a snowboard company, it just happened, because it had to happen. The splitsticks story is based on the desire to have a reliable all mountain tool with superior performance. After the first prototype that was built only for private purpose, we built a second set of 5 pieces for some friends and were quite happy with everything as it was. A little video posted on the internet, and things started to go their own way. Then an email from the ISPO dudes asked us to participate in their award program. No time, no interest, sorry. That was our reply. Finally a friend convinced us to do so and we did, and won the ISPO brandnew award in 2013 in the category best winter hardware. Booom.
